sharing a contemporary classic lifestyle through fashion

CTRL Editor’s Picks

After another long hiatus, I am back to writing. It feels good to be back as this year has not had a lot of outlets for me. While there has been much stress in my school life, hopefully I am back to doing what I love for good. And if you were wondering what that is, it is writing about fashion and my life for all of you!

Over the past few weeks, I have been reading through lots of different articles on magazine editor’s top picks. Scanning sites like Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Refinery 29, and Cosmo I think I have figured out which pieces they love most. Hint, they are pretty much all accessories.

The first item I read about were pearls. More specifically, pearl earrings. This piece is a classic, dating all the way back to the 1800s. Nowadays, a simpler earring is used to elevate a simple look. A nice white tee, wide leg denim jeans, and white sneakers can look coffeehouse chic with a pair of pearl earrings. Personally, I would opt for my favorite double pearl that adds the most subtle, classy detail.

Have you been looking for a piece that essentially has an unlimited number of uses? Let me introduce you to the favorite silk scarf. This item comes in a variety of sizes, patterns, and colors that are used for so many different things. Need a headband? Silk scarf. Want to add some color to a braided ponytail? Silk scarf. Dressing up your beige handbag for a night on the town? Yes, a silk scarf! I love wrapping one around the strap of a bag and tying it around my neck when I am wearing a black or grey top. Although Hermes is the most well-known, I have found my favorite scarves by Kate Spade, Madewell, J. Crew, and Zara.

Everyone loves gold, and luckily these next two go hand in hand. Both a gold hoop and gold chain necklace. Gold hoops have been trending for a while, but they have become a wardrobe staple. A small, dainty hoop that is a little chunky looks great with almost every outfit, yes even with sweatpants. Now the gold chain has really been a flexible piece this season. Traditional is a paperclip style chain, but brands like Kendra Scott are making this piece more elevated. Adding pearl details, making it multi-strand, even encrusting it with sapphires. Both these pieces are must haves, especially going into warmer climates, so you can dress up your basic shorts and tees.

Summer may still be a few weeks (or months) away, but bucket hats are already flooding stores. This is, again, an elevated piece as it has been seen in structured, printed canvas, leather, and even some faux shearing. In fact, many TikTokers and influencers have been seen wearing thus designer headwear. During the cooler months, I would definitely snag a white shearling bucket hat from Madewell, functional and a nice contrast piece. So even while we are still getting snow in the northeast, you can keep warm in your trendy and fashionable hat.

The best thing about these pieces, in my opinion, is how versatile and neutral they are. More colorful versions can be used to add some vibrancy to your look, but a more mellow piece can take any outfit to the next level. Not to mention, these pieces are all amazing to transition with each and every season. Hopefully you start to incorporate some of these editor’s picks into your wardrobe. I already have and I am feeling more fashionable already.

Xx, Ris
